Winter Fests and Exchanges

I realize this is probably a crazy thing to be thinking about in the middle of summer, but... harry_holidays  sign ups are going on now, which is why I thought of it. So...... what are my options, guys? What winter fests are you doing? I know that I'll be doing something for daily_deviant  and rs_small_gifts  and I've been toying with the idea of hp_yule_balls , but I don't know what else is out there to choose from. I promised myself that I would not load myself down with fest fics this year but come September I won't have anything to write about and I will have missed the sign ups. I suspect this will make me whiny. When do sign ups for rs_small_gifts  start? Couldn't I have either the harry_holidays  or hp_yule_balls (I am NOT NOT NOT doing both) fic wrapped up before sign ups for rs_small_gifts  even got off the ground? Same for daily_deviant . Ack. Are there any other Remus/Sirius fests? Oh, oh! There is brighty18 's fest, isn't there? I didn't do it last year because I was swamped at work.


Oh, oh, oh! Speaking of which. I ran across something today! crack_broom  is hazardous for my writing. I end up reading pairings I don't even like. And worse! No Sirius! *gasps*

Anyway, over at lupin_snape  (don't ask me why I was reading there, I don't even like the pairing) they have a remix challenge just for that pairing. Why doesn't Remus/Sirius have that (does not want to mod another fest, does not want to mod another fest, does not want to mod another fest)? Remus/Sirius should totally have that. Someone needs to get on that pronto. Not me.

I'm doing yule balls (probably) and small gifts and probably some sort of TW fest. I was thinking of doing a drabble thingy at mp_ldws for Christmas. A tiny exchange of drabbles or something... The idea hasn't taken form yet, and I haven't even talked to Di about it...

I don't know where I would squeeze it in. Never mind, I didn't say that because I'm not doing it. I think emilyia and I are going to do rs_career_fest earlier in the year next year to give people more time to write. So I don't know where I'd put it. Shit. Not me, not me.

I feel like I fail as a longtime fanfiction reader, but... can someone clarify what remixes, er, are, exactly? *bites lip nervously*

It's where you take someone else's fic and rewrite it from a different angle. Take my fics for example, I write mostly from Remus' POV. So someone would take my fic and write it from Sirius' POV. Or, write from a third party observers POV. They take the original work, and use it as a inspiration for a new work written from a different angle.

How much can it deviate? I mean, does the dialogue, for example, need to match exactly? Can scenes be expanded or cut, so long as it's still definitely recognizable as the the same story?

This is sweet music to my ears. Does this mean you would be willing to take point on the fest and I would be your helper? Also, eprime is interested in helping as well.

A remix is a big undertaking and we'd either have to be able to get pinch hitters or take musesfool's hard stance which is, if you (the remixer) don't turn in your remix, we (the mods) won't start posting. And we will post a list of those who are behind. Or something. I don't know.

The thing that makes me the most nervous about a remix challenge is that every fest has drop outs. A remix is like an exhange only way more personal because people's creations are being touched and used, you know?

I love, love, love rs_small_gifts. I hated that I was so swamped last year that I couldn't participate like I wanted. I mean, I wrote for it, but I hardly got to read anything, and only left a few comments. I felt terrible about that. Cannot wait for this year to make up for it.

Did no one mention mini_fest?

mini_fest is the brain child of brissygirl. Who after seeing all the Christmas fests that were requesting sign-ups before the end of August. Decided to try and run a small christmas fest. Where you can write/draw whatever you like whatever rating you like, whatever pairing you like.

If you're writing you are only required to write a 500 word ficlet of any genre, characters/pairings, era that you like. There is no word limit other than the 500 words that you start with. If your muse if playing nicely and you want to write 5000 words you are more than welcome too.

If you're drawing pretty much anything goes.

All I ask is since this is a Christmas fest that entries have a Christmas/Holiday theme of some description, this includes traditional Yule or Solstice celebrations and any other religious or non-religious holiday held at the same time of year. This is a prompt fest, not an exchange. Prompts are available to everyone and can be used by multiple participants. Select as many prompts from the lists as you want and use them in any combination to create your fic/art.

I am trying to decide exactly which ones I want to participate in. I suspect I am going to go with Harry Holidays simply because I can ask for both het and slash as gifts. I still enjoy reading the occasional Sirius/Hermione if it is well written, but there just isn't a lot of activity in that fandom anymore.
