Title: Compromise
Author:
ceredwensirius
Written For:
toujours_nigel‘s birthday
Rating: somewhere between PG13 and light R (maybe)
Word Count: 276
Warnings: Um, really, really vague; implied slash, implied het, implied threesome (I think - did I mention vague?)
Characters/Pairing: James/Sirius, James/Lily, James/Lily/Sirius
Summary: Sometimes you have to surrender in order to win.
Author's notes: Happy birthday sweetheart! I hope your day is lovely!
Melting away like smoke drifting off on a careless breeze, like soft, dry sand slipping between fingers or the remnants of a dream that danced on the edge of consciousness, Lily knew there was something of which she should be aware, but always it was gone before her fingers could close into a fist. Constructing a clear picture wasn’t so easy when shape-shifting puzzle pieces never stay put. There is an incongruence that does not lend itself to the pointing of a finger and a triumphant “a-ha!”
If James would hold Sirius’ gaze just a little too long, touch him just a mite too intimately, then Lily could follow the steps like building a proof for arithmancy class. The evidence for such carefully hidden in boyish jostle and tussle, wrestling bodies in the common room far too common for raised eyebrows and suspicions.
The question itself eluded evasively; inappropriate conduct veiled behind a curtain of crimson and Silencing Charms (and Remus. And Peter). The niggling, nagging, gnawing something available only fleetingly in the depths of grey, grey eyes that proclaimed, “I will never let him go.”
And in the end, it is that which unwrapped them, when her realization came hard and harsh like a mid-winter wind tearing at her lips, her skin. Her heart. Obvious to a fault, Sirius cannot help but mock with a cool twist of curving lips. It was a war she could not win; Sirius had him first, knew him best.
Lily though, was not a woman to be underestimated. Two hands reach out, two black heads pulled to her breast, to her bed, and in compromise, she found victory.
