Once he had seen her, really seen her, there was no turning back. One foot in a room, and he knows she’s there, though he can’t explain how that can be. It could be the eyes he feels following him around, like a cat stalking a mouse, though in truth, who is cat and who is mouse can sometimes be difficult to discern. He watches her, too, and just as carefully. They banter and rotate around each other, weaving in and out of friends and relations, always aware of the other’s position. A phrase from her, turned just so, can be taken in multiple directions at once.

Sometimes, he thinks he catches a particular smile, and wonders if it is just sport, if she is just baiting him, testing the limits of his boundaries. He’s not sure he believes that, not when she stands next to Harry in casual conversation, and when no one but he is looking, catches his eye and licks her lips.

To catch her alone, unprotected for just one fleeting moment becomes an obsession. A single unguarded word, an acknowledgement is all he needs. One small sign to let him know, to acquiesce, and bring this game out of the shadows.

In the end, neither of them need to say a single word. He is coming and she is going; there is something about that strikes him as so typical of all their interactions. The door opens to the outside before he can raise his hand to depress the lever on the handle. She looks out, he looks in, and then they look at each other. Taking this moment for what it is, masculine fingers wrap gently around a feminine wrist. His eyes implore, ask the question, and in response, she drops her gaze, and nods.
