.... on a whim. It was based on a throw away comment in the comments of a rant on [livejournal.com profile] fanficrants . The new comm is [livejournal.com profile] ffraperants . It seemed like a good idea, and if there is one thing that is a pet peeve of mine, it is rape depicted as something the raped male or female is desiring. See, that's not rape. That's ravishment or rough sex or hate sex or what have you. Rape is specific and horrible in all its varied forms. Think about, if you were forced to endure intercourse against your will, would you want to live happily ever after with that person? That's just one example. Anyway, we'll see how it grows or if it grows. There are some fantastical misrepresentations of the act in fanfiction. Join if you so desire.

:)

love you, too. it always surprises me when i read rape and the author seems to think there is nothing rapey about it, or that the act was desired. it makes me think they don't understand it.

and i get that it is a fantasy for some, and that fanfiction is place to explore that. fine, do us all a favor and warn.

I have told you (at length) about the James/Peter, yes?

I will never get why the difference between BDSM and rape is so difficult to understand. It's called consent, serously.

On AIP? I'm guessing that is a no. I think perhaps you have not.

Or when there is a lack of consent and the author doesn't get that either. I read a S/H recently where Sirius gives Hermione the equivalent of a wizarding Rohypnol and treats it like this was consent. Um, no. To make matters worse, she gets pregnant and they live happily ever after. In what world does this happen, because I would like to avoid it all costs.

Thank you for doing this. I'm a survivor of an abusive relationship that included ( while not out-and-out rape) a lot of coercion and sexual battery. When I read about things like that in fanfic I want to comment to the author and ask if theyve ever actually had anything like that happen to them, and if they had, they'd never write it like that. I agree that BDSM and rough sex are a totally different animal than rape.

I think that rape often lives in the grey areas, though, you know? In general, I think writing about rape is probably a good thing, in the sense that, what we write about, especially in terms of fanfiction, is a dialog we are having not only with each other, but with ourselves as well. We explore what it means, what our reaction is to it, what we as women think about it, what we want to do about it. However, writing about it as something the person being raped wants is... a little irresponsible I think and serves, sadly, to show how far we have to go as a society in thinking about it. Because if we write about it as something that is perfectly desirable then why are we surprised when it happens in real life? Or more to the point, why when it happens in real life, the recourse for the person raped isn't what it ought to be, because we've all been so busy living in the gray area.

Just my thoughts. I'll be pulling this comm together over the next couple of weekends. My work life just exploded and will be spending a lot of time doing over time and the rest eating and sleeping.
