I don't think there is a reluctance to read AU. Look at the pairings list at crack_broom. At least half are not possible outside of AU's.
I just wish we could steal some attention from the more popular pairings like Harry/Draco or Snape/everyone. But actually, I guess R/S is "best friends fall in love." The other pairings like that are Ron/Hermione and Harry/Ron, dying out, and Seamus/Dean, George/Lee, never very popular. Plus of course, all of those are Trio Era.
