Hermione's handbag slipped from her fingers to the sidewalk. She was too stunned to even hear it hit the ground.
"What? Why?"
"This isn't working out, not for me, anyway," he began. He looked away, running a leather gloved hand though his hair in agitation.
"I don't-"
"I love that bike, Hermoine. I loved her long before I ever met you, and I spent too many years locked up..." he faltered and then seemed to regroup. "I want to explore the world. I want to see everything, go everywhere, and I want to do it on my bike. I had hoped..." he paused again. "We want different things, you and I, and I think... I think this is for the best."
Hermione blinked, too stunned to know what to say in answer to this. This was over the bike? She wasn't more important than the bike?
"It isn't about the bike," he said, taking a step closer. "I'm sure that's exactly what you're thinking, isn't it? It is about lifestyle, and that yours doesn't fit mine."
"Wait," she said, putting her hand up. "We're happy."
"You're happy," he clarified. "I love you, Hermione, but I'm bored. I feel restless-" He looked away, and kicked at the ground with his foot. "You never even gave the idea a chance."
Selfish, she said to herself. You always think you know what is best for others and look where it has gotten you.
Hermione took a deep breath and rallied her courage, she was a Gryffindor damn it, and she wasn't losing her man without a fight. "You know I have a fear of flying, don't you?"
"I also know you never even tried to get over it," he said, taking a step closer to the bike.
"It doesn't like me, you know," she said, pivoting to watch him lay a hand on the handle bar. The bike seemed to give a light shiver under the touch.
"Never gave her a chance," came the reply. "Why should she?"
