I was thinking of the Prank as well. It does show an alarming lack of consideration for others, which could indicate Sirius just... isn't capable of understanding why his actions are bad. This is all from Remus's POV but in my head, Sirius was acting on the crush he had on Remus, and was just not able to imagine that Remus was not having as good a time as he was.
And yeah, that's the problem I had when I thought about how to continue it. The only thing so far I've been able to think of that might work is horribly sad and basically involves Remus never telling James or Peter what really happened, or even telling Sirius what he actually did, pulling away from everybody to the point where it's incredibly easy for Peter to make them suspect Remus is the spy, and then finally after the events of PoA Remus and Sirius take steps toward resolving things. orz
